Bryce Harper, Nationals no longer negotiating, owner says

According to reports, Harper rejected a 10-year, $300 million offer from Washington in September.

If the owner's words are to be believed, it would seem the Washington Nationals may have already given up on the hope of possibly re-signing superstar free-agent outfielder Bryce Harper. "You can't be mad at him, and I don't think he'd be mad at us if we can't go any further".

Principal owner Mark Lerner indicated to 106.7 The Fan in an interview Friday that the team has moved on from the free-agent slugger after making a monster offer on the final day of the regular season. Heck, with Harper, I think that multiple World Series wins can not be ruled out.

"I don't really expect him to come back at this point". "We thought it was good business - we had to fix the things we needed to fix".

When the offseason began, I had pretty much accepted that the White Sox would make a serious run at Manny Machado, maybe check in on Bryce Harper, and I was just going to hope for the best either way.

"We've always been honest with him".

Harper will be the talk of the Winter Meetings, which start Sunday in Las Vegas, his hometown.

From the swanky glitz of the five-star Georgetown Four Seasons hotel, to the upscale dinner, the Nationals pulled out all the stops to attract top free-agent starting pitcher Patrick Corbin as part of his late November tour down the East Coast.

The baseball world got an update on that big news on Friday when the Nationals made the signing official.

Corbin joins three-time Cy Young Award victor Scherzer, he of the $210 million deal, and three-time NL All-Star Strasburg, with a $175 million extension of his own.

Corbin gets a $2.5 million signing bonus payable next October 31 and salaries of $12.5 million next season, $19 million in 2020, $24 million in 2021, $23 million in 2022, $24 million in 2023 and $35 million in 2024 - when he turns 35. They weren't going past five years, 100 million dollars.

"If he comes back, it's a strong possibility that we won't be able to make it work", Lerner said.
