Google's app turns your phone into a museum

18 cultural institutions from seven countries worked together to launch "Meet Vermeer", the largest online retrospective of Vermeer on the Google Arts & Culture app and platform.

It is described as the first-ever worldwide online retrospective of Vermeer.

The Arts and Culture app will now showcase the artwork of Johannes Vermeer, the Dutch Golden Age painter.

The app is curated by the Mauritshuis museum in the Netherlands, which has Vermeer's best-known painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring, in its collection.

In addition to "Girl with a Pearl Earring", perhaps the most famous work by the Dutch Master, viewers will find "The Concert", which went missing more than 28 years ago in a famous heist at Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

Art lovers can also use the app to take guided tours that reveal the history behind Vermeer's other paintings, including famous works such as The Art of Painting.

Vermeer's life: discover who the mysterious, introspective artist behind the Girl with a Pearl Earring and the Milkmaid was, and how he was forgotten for centuries.

It's a pretty neat way to get to know one of the world's most renowned artists in one location.

Google has previously made art galleries accessible virtually through its Museum Views feature, which gives users a Street View-like experience through spaces like New York's Museum of Modern Art, to the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris, France.

"As you step closer, you'll see each painting in stunning detail and can learn more about each piece", Google Arts & Culture program manager Lucy Schwartz wrote in a blog post.
