GOP-led Michigan Senate to vote on bill to strip Dem's power

In one concession, Wisconsin Republicans backed away from giving the Legislature the power to sidestep the attorney general and appoint their own attorney when state laws are challenged in court.

Other critics of the bill, however, contended that the commission would be ineffectual, saying its members would deadlock and be accountable to political parties that would submit a list of possible appointees to the governor.

All over the country, Republicans are so angry that they lost the last election that they're finding ways to undermine not just their opponents, but voters as well.

Republicans in Wisconsin passed legislation on December 5 that will weaken the power of the governor and attorney general while strengthening the Republican-controlled legislature.

But Tony Evers (EE'-vers) says he'll first make a personal appeal to Republican Gov. Scott Walker to veto the legislation. Tammy Baldwin, the Democrat incumbent.

Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Paul Ryan speaks inside the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol, Dec. 3, 2018 in Washington.

The legislation also prevents the new Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul from withdrawing from federal lawsuits without their approval.

Robin Vos, the apeaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly, told reporters the day after the election that the plan is meant to "re-balance" power following the Walker administration.

"We have allowed far too much authority to flow to the executive", Vos said.

Outgoing Republican Gov. Scott Walker has signaled he supports the legislation. "We don't trust Tony Evers right now in a lot of these areas".

Wisconsin Republicans are working through the night to bring together enough votes to pass a sweeping package of lame-duck proposals created to empower the GOP-controlled Legislature and weaken the incoming Democrat replacing Republican Gov. Scott Walker.

The lame-duck moves followed within hours of similar efforts in Wisconsin, where lawmakers voted earlier Wednesday to shift clout to the Republican-controlled Legislature and weaken the Democrat replacing the GOP governor.

The minimum wage and paid-sick-leave legislation, which passed Tuesday, are reversals from September when they were approved in Lansing.

The proposed changes next head to the state House for consideration, however, they appear to be illegal and a lawsuit is likely.

Evers and Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes will take office after an inauguration ceremony on January 7.

The campaign finance commission would assume a number of responsibilities now under the purview of the state secretary of state. That bill would also give the Legislature oversight over the governor seeking future waivers for health care, a change Democrats said would handcuff the new administration.

Secretary of State-elect Jocelyn Benson ran on a platform of election transparency, so the legislature basically changed the rules so that that is no longer included in her job description.

Meanwhile, in MI, the legislature will also remain in control of Republicans, but the governor, attorney general, and secretary of state will all be Democrats for the first time in almost three decades.

"The Legislature makes the laws, the executive branch enforces the laws and the judicial branch interprets the laws", said Rep. Robert Wittenberg of Huntington Woods. Democrats call the move a breach of separation of powers.
