Israel may expand anti-tunnel operation into Lebanon, minister warns

In a letter to the Security Council, Lebanese Ambassador Amal Mudallali charged that Israel was waging a "political and diplomatic war" against Lebanon, which she said marked a prelude to "further attacks".

"The IDF has located an additional Hezbollah cross-border attack tunnel", spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus said, declining to give details on its precise location or dimensions.

"The tunnel crosses into Israel; like the first tunnel it is not yet operational and does not pose an imminent threat to Israeli communities", he said in a briefing with journalists, according to AFP.

The find makes this at least the second cross-border tunnel discovered since Israel began an operation this week to detect and "neutralize" attack passageways dug by the Iranian-backed group into northern Israel.

Conricus said on Saturday that the army had placed explosives in the newly exposed tunnel to prevent its use as a means to infiltrate Israel, but had not yet destroyed it.

Said Danon: "In the upcoming debate, we will present conclusive evidence of Hezbollah's violations and the willful blindness of the Lebanese government".

Meanwhile, Israeli Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz said on Friday that the Israeli military could extend its activities near the border with Lebanon into the Arab country.

The IDF has booby-trapped the tunnel and anyone entering the tunnel from the Lebanese side is risking their life.

Earlier on Saturday, the Israeli military fired at three Hezbollah suspects who approached the border where the army was working.

Lebanon has lodged a complaint with the United Nations against Israel's hacking into the country's telephone network in light of a recent operation that the Israeli military has undertaken to block what it claims are tunnels Hezbollah resistance movement has dug into occupied territories.

A statement from Netanyahu said that in his phone call with Putin he had also "stressed once more Israel's policy aimed at preventing Iran's entrenchment in Syria and at acting against Iran and Hezbollah's aggression".

The relationship between Russia and Israel has been strained since September, when Russia accused Israel of indirectly causing the downing of a Russian military jet by Syrian air defences following an Israeli air strike nearby.

Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes in Syria against what it says are Iranian military targets and deliveries of advanced arms to Hezbollah.

However, in the 12 years since the passage of that resolution Hezbollah has - with Iranian backing - strengthened its forces and its missile capabilities in southern Lebanon.
