John Kelly Reportedly 'Furious' With Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner Over Firing

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway broke the news on Fox News Tuesday morning, as flagged by the Washington Post.

Trump announced Saturday that John Kelly, the current chief of staff, would leave the White House at the end of the year.

The couple reportedly objected to one Trump favorite, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC), who they don't know well, and they also oppose former Trump deputy campaign manager David Bossie and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

The opening comes as the White House braces for an onslaught of political and legal challenges in the coming year.

"We just brought in a new White House Counsel today who just started, who is going to be fabulous", Kushner said, referring to Pat Cipollone, who is taking over as the Trump administration's top lawyer as multiple reports and indications suggest Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe is winding down.

Vice President Mike Pence's chief of staff, Nick Ayers, surprised Washington after declining the job, leaving the administration altogether to return to Georgia. Trump has denied any collusion, while calling the probe a "witch hunt". "A lot of friends of mine want it", he said without naming names.

Kushner and Ivanka Trump would like Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, whom they view as loyal, to take over for Kelly, but the Cabinet official doesn't seem to be interested. He is the point person for talks between the administration and China over trade, an issue likely to dominate the first part of 2019 and beyond.

Trump later told reporters that he was in "no rush" to name a successor to Kelly and that he expected to announce a replacement in a week or two.
