New Zealand beat Pakistan in third Test to win historic series

Mickey Arthur said after the first Test here in Abu Dhabi that Pakistan cricket had the ability to move on, and it looks like they've moved on without learning a single thing from it.

New Zealand spectacularly snatched the decider of the Test series against hosts Pakistan from the jaws of defeat to register a 2-1 first away victory in the longest format of the game in 49 years. For several teams, it would be a match that stood out for years, the poster child for the need to learn lessons.

"It was fantastic, beating Pakistan in their backyard is very tough", New Zealand captain Kane Williamson said.

New Zealand returns home for a two-test series with Sri Lanka starting next week.

Black Caps captain Kane Williamson was elated with the result.

While Tim Southee, Ajaz Patel, and William Somerville picked three wickets each, Colin de Grandhomme had one scalp to his name too.

But the day started with Yasir's world record. Asad is a wonderful player.

Sarfraz Ahmed admitted he was gutted as Pakistan fell to only their second series defeat in the UAE. Babar's half-century was a bright spot in a dispiriting series for Pakistan, and a reminder he will have to carry an increasing burden over the weeks and months to come, most immediately in the series in South Africa later this month. 10 and 11 at the crease, and the end was inevitable.

Resuming at 26-2, New Zealand also lost Ross Taylor who cracked three of his four boundaries in one over from paceman Shaheen Shah Afridi before finally hooking the same bowler into the hands of Bilal Asif for 22.

Bangladesh absolutely dominated an admittedly poor West Indian team in two tests last month, and are probably set to be a tougher challenge than Sri Lanka. Just a shame it didn't come from him. That slowed them down, but the worst was yet to come.

Can Somerville and Patel repeat their efforts in New Zealand, or did they benefit from favourable conditions in the United Arab Emirates?

Earlier, Henry Nicholls scored his third test century, finishing with an unbeaten 126, as New Zealand declared their second innings at 353-7.

Set 280 to win in 79 overs on the last day, Pakistan was 55-5 by lunch, and was all out for 156 in an extended middle session. Another ten runs off the next, in which Nicholls moved to 99, made it clear that a quick declaration was on the cards.

Nicholls took a sharp single to complete his third Test hundred and finished with 12 hits to the ropes during his 266-ball knock.

Pakistan leg-spinner Yasir Shah has become the fastest bowler to reach 200 Test wickets.

"It was our series to win but we ended up as the losing side and that's highly disappointing".
