Quora breach leaks data on over 100 million users

Quora was affected by unauthorized access to one of its systems.

Quora.com, a site where people ask and answer questions on a range of topics, said hackers breached its computer network and accessed a variety of potentially sensitive personal data for about 100 million users.

Quora first realised it had been compromised on Friday and immediately began investigating. There has been no official confirmation yet as to what linked data Quora imports from social logins from popular social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

It also said that the password data was salted and hashed to prevent attackers from using it, but to be cautious, users should also reset passwords on their other accounts if they shared the same one.

Also compromised was non-public content such as answer requests, downvotes and direct messages, d'Angelo said. Investigations are still ongoing, and they, along with law enforcement and a third-party digital forensics firm, have yet to find out who was behind the hack.

"We are in the process of notifying users whose data has been compromised", Quora CEO Adam D'Angelo said in a blog post. Anonymously authored questions and answers were reportedly not affected by the breach, and the company said it doesn't store information from anonymous users. If the incident has irked you enough to delete your Quora account, you can find out how to do so here, and also learn about resetting your password and obtaining a copy of your data from the site on this attack FAQ page.

For everyone else, there's this advice: "While the passwords were encrypted (hashed with a salt that varies for each user), it is generally a best practice not to reuse the same password across multiple services, and we recommend that people change their passwords if they are doing so".
