But in choosing the 60-year-old Milley, a graduate of Princeton University known for his combat command experience, Trump went against the wishes of Mattis, who reportedly favoured Air Force General David Goldfein.

Milley has been Army chief of staff since 2015.

President Donald Trump officially announced he will be nominating Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley to serve as the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on Saturday. He has commanded units with the 10th Mountain Division and the 101st Airborne and served multiple combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"I am thankful to both these incredible men for their service to our country", Trump said on Twitter. He said the date of transition is being determined.

The Milley move starts a series of military leadership changes in coming months, including successors in 2019 for Adm. John Richardson as the chief of naval operations, Gen. Robert Neller as commandant of the Marine Corps, and Air Force Gen. Paul Selva as vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs.

By selecting Milley for the top military post, Trump is keeping it in the hands of the ground services.

Trump is expected to announce his decision Saturday at the annual Army-Navy football game in Philadelphia. Dunford is expected to serve out his term.

As Army chief of staff, Milley joined other senior military leaders in issuing what was interpreted as a subtle rebuke of Trump in August 2017, when the president blamed "both sides" for violence at rallies in Charlottesville, Va., when a white supremacist rammed his auto into a crowd, killing a woman. He would take the position for a four-year term, after a new law was passed last year doubling the term length to better ensure continuity.

He also served as deputy commanding general of USA forces in Afghanistan.

Milley also served as a Green Beret, one of the US Army's most elite teams.

Milley became Army chief of staff in August 2015.
