Two-year-old needs some of the rarest blood in the world to survive

Now, the two-year-old is at the centre of a worldwide search to find donors with the same extremely rare blood who can help her, a battle dependent on statistics and probabilities that her parents have become all too familiar with. But finding compatible donors is immensely challenging, because she's missing a common antigen most people carry in their blood, called "Indian B". InsideEdition.com's Lisa Voyticki has more.

This is the reason why it's that much more hard to find someone else who's blood is also missing the Indian-B Antigen.

OneBlood says that ideally, it will be able to locate donors of these ethnicities who live in the United States.

Sandra Nance, senior director of the ARDP, explained that OneBlood has tracked approximately 59 types of rare blood with more than 120,000 donors on the registry. The South Florida child will need several blood transfusions as her treatment continues.

More than 1000 people of Iranian, Indian or Pakistani descent have donated blood in an attempt to see if they are compatible with Zainab.

Now OneBlood is working with the American Rare Donor Program, an organisation that connects donors with needy patients across the world. Fighting it would require two bone marrow transplants and a series of transfusions to replenish her blood supply as chemotherapy shrinks the tumour to nothing, doctors said.

Because of the limitations on how much blood donors can give and how often they can give it, there would need to be at least 10 donors on standby. She said not a single donor matching Zainab's blood type was registered in the program's U.S. database when the search for matching donors began in September.

Since sharing her story on their site, Zainab has luckily found three donors already, including one from the United Kingdom - the first time OneBlood has received an global donor for a local patient - but she will need approximately four to six more donors in order to survive.

Those who believe they would be a good match with Zainab can find more information here.

"The results came in and the results were really bad", her father, Raheel Mughal, said in a video.

"She's going to need to be completely supported by blood donations in order to survive the cancer treatment in order to kill this cancer", said Frieda Bright, a lab manager for OneBlood. "The blood's not going to cure her, but the blood's very, very important to support her while she undergoes the treatment for this particular cancer". A blood group is considered rare if one in a 1,000 has a certain antigen, or lacks a certain antigen.

"It's a humble request, and I request it from my heart", Mughal said in a video produced by OneBlood. "If you are one of those people from the Middle East, please go out and donate blood for my daughter", he said.
