Amazon's IMDb Launches Free Movie and TV Streaming Service

The irony, though, is that the number of streaming services to choose from keeps on getting larger, essentially making the media landscape as confusing and pricey as the cable packages of old. That said, Freedive is a bit different from current streaming sites insofar that it's completely free and, in turn, ad-supported.

IMDb Freedive will feature Amazon's X-Ray technology, which allows viewers to dive deeper into the movies or shows by accessing IMDb-powered additional information, such as cast, crew, trivia, and soundtracks.

Still, with IMDb already a popular place for many people to visit, it could certainly draw viewer in and serve as a further experiment for the ad-driven streaming market to see just how viable and desirable it is to the broader market. Customers don't need a subscription to enjoy Freedive content, but they do need either a Fire TV device or a computer to access the content through IMDb's website.

IMDb Freedive offers a variety of content, spanning film and television, at no cost.

The company said its existing video content - trailers, interviews, and original short series - will be integrated into the new service.

The Amazon-owned movie database site has launched IMDb Freedive (imdb.com/freedive), a free streaming video channel available in the U.S. IMDb declined to say how many titles are initially available; the site now lists over 130 movies and 29 TV shows to stream for free.

It'll be available via your computer, but also through Amazon's Fire TV devices. Presently, Freedive is only available for the U.S customers. Freedive is free, but its offering of full-length movies and TV shows does come with ads.

I gave IMDb Freedive a little bit of a spin, and my early impressions are largely positive.
