AMD takes aim at Intel with new Ryzen and er, Chromebook CPUs

Semiconductor company AMD has unveiled latest processors for its mobility line-up, including the 2nd-generation Ryzen 3000 Series Mobile, which are the world's fastest processor for ultra-thin laptops.

When many were expecting CES 2019 to mark the launch of AMD's first 7nm Ryzen chips and Vega 2 graphics cards, Team Red has instead kicked off the show with the somewhat boring announcement of new 12nm Zen+ Ryzen 3000 mobile processors. But while Acer boasted to be the first to announce one such Chromebook, HP will actually have the first bite of that market.

This tablet will sport the same version of Chrome OS available on the notebooks and desktops children will likely encounter later as they get older, the company touts.

Asus is calling it the launch of its Chromebook Education series, created to provide "lightweight, ruggedized Chrome OS computer solutions" for the education sector. Asus says that the new models will be available in the coming months with configurations and pricing to be announced nearer the time. The tablet has the 10mm rubberised chassis that's rated drops up to 100cm. The convertible sports an 11.6-inch display with a 360-degree hinge, a dual-core Intel Celeron processor, up to 8GB RAM, 64GB of internal memory, microSD support, USB Type-C ports, and a headphone jack. It also has a stylus storage slot like the CT100. That includes the Intel Celeron processor, 4GB of RAM and 32GB onboard storage.

The Chromebook C204 is an entry-level Chromebook.

If you hadn't guessed, the C204 is the successor to the C202 and the C214 is the follow up to the Asus C213. The device has 4GB of RAM, 32GB built-in storage, and 47.36 Wh battery. During his 6 weeks with the device, senior technical marketing manager for AMD's client business unit Robert Hallock stated that the company's new Chromebook served him well, with at least 10 hours of battery life and the ability to handle H.264 and H.265 encoding.
