China prepares for landing of lunar probe Chang'e 4

The control centre will choose a proper time to land the probe on the far side of the moon, according to CNSA. And because lunar eclipses can occur only during a full moon, and the first full moon in January is known as a "wolf moon", many are calling this spectacular event a "Super Blood Wolf Moon Eclipse".

The mission is groundbreaking for a number of reasons but the most notable is that it'll be the first soft landing on the far side of the Moon, and China's second Moon landing overall. It is planning to launch construction of its own manned space station next year.

The Chang'e-4 probe contains a lander, as well as a rover that can explore the lunar surface.

A particular area of focus is the Aitken basin, which is one of the largest craters in the solar system.

Scientists have also confirmed that the sky will have lots of busy days and nights in the months that follow with three supermoons, a blue moon, a close approach by the moon and Jupiter, and several rocket launches.

Locked in a tidal embrace with the same lunar face always aimed at the Earth, the moon's far side - also known as the "dark" side - has not been explored on the surface, although numerous orbital flyovers have made detailed maps.

While humans have visited the near side, or the visible side of the moon multiple times, the dark side of the moon has long fascinated humanity.

For those unaware, the near side of the moon was reached by USA astronauts between 1969 and 1976, while the Soviet Union achieved the feat in 1976.

China is ready to become the first country to send a probe to the dark side of the moon.

The Chang'e 4 is very similar to the Chang'e 3, which was China's very first Moon landing success, and its successor is actually a backup version of the previous model that has been modified to carry out new mission objectives.

However, neither the USA nor Russian Federation have been impressed by China's ambitions to become a major space power by 2030.

Chang'e-4, the probe reportedly entered a planned orbit late Sunday, according to the official Xinhua news agency. The Chang'e-4 mission is being regarded as a seminal step for the country to propel its space programme forward, and to establish itself in the sector.

Beijing, for its part, insists its intentions are completely peaceful.
