Company uses AI to catch people sharing Netflix passwords with friends

Synamedia showed off the new service at CES 2019, a technology show that takes place in Las Vegas every year, and explained it looks at various user behaviours to make its assertions.

If you share your Netflix password with your friends then you'd better watch out - a dystopian new AI has been created to crack down on account sharing.

But in many cases, users will be urged to upgrade a more expensive multi-user subscription.

The system is being tested and in the future it will be offered to services like Netflix and HBO.

According to Synamedia, research from Magid has shown that 26 percent of millennials give out their password to others to use video-streaming services.

"A typical pattern would be you have a subscriber that is simultaneously watching content on the East Coast and the West Coast of the US", Synamedia's chief product officer, Jean-Marc Racine, told The Verge.

If the software finds that passwords are being sold through for-profit operations, the accounts could be shut down.

Meanwhile Parks Associates predicts that by 2021, $9.9billion of pay-tv revenues and $1.2billion of streaming revenues will be lost to password sharing.

A streaming service, like Netflix and Amazon Prime, buys access to Synamedia's platform.

"Many casual users will be happy to pay an additional fee for a premium, shared service with a greater number of concurrent users", Racine said. The data includes a range of factors, like where an account is being accessed from, what time it's used, what content is being watched and by what device.

"Using AI, behavioral analytics and machine learning, Synamedia Credentials Sharing Insight identifies, monitors and analyzes credentials sharing activity across streaming accounts", the company's website says.

Synamedia says the system has already begun trials, though no official release date has been set as of yet.
