Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen to testify publicly before Congress

Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen to testify publicly before Congress

A hearing could delve into the financial deals of the Trump Organisation as well as the Trump 2016 election campaign's dealings with Russian Federation, already being probed by the team of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

In December, he was sentenced to a total of three years in prison, with the jail term to begin in March.

Former U.S. federal prosecutor Roland Riopelle called it "a very frightening development" for Trump.

"Mr. Cohen has expressed an interest in telling his personal story in open session, and we welcome his testimony before the Committee on Oversight and Reform", Schiff said.

"I'm not anxious about it at all", Mr Trump said of Cohen's looming testimony. "And much of it has been blacked out in the court documents, so far". Under federal law, it is illegal for corporations to make expenditures to influence an election in coordination with or at the request of a candidate or campaign.

The women have claimed they had affairs with Trump after the real estate mogul married his third wife, Melania.

The hearing marks the latest step in Cohen's transformation from a trusted legal adviser to the president to a public antagonist who has co-operated extensively against him.

Mr Cohen once professed to be so loyal to Mr Trump that he would take a bullet for his boss. The Democrats promised to use their new majority in the House of Representatives to delve deeper than ever before into Donald Trump's pre-presidential background.

Individual 1 was a reference to Trump. However, he will not force Cohen to "do anything to interfere with the [ongoing] Mueller investigation". Cohen, a consigliere to Trump when he was a real estate developer and presidential candidate as well as informally as president, was privy to the machinations of Trump's inner circle and key moments under scrutiny by both special counsel Robert Mueller and federal prosecutors in NY.

It noted that the committee has "no interest in inappropriately interfering with any ongoing criminal investigations", and will be consulting with Special Counsel Robert Mueller beforehand.

Cohen cooperated with Mueller's investigation after his August guilty plea, and his congressional testimony could thrust some of those still-private details he provided into the public sphere.

Trump has denied wrongdoing and sought to minimize Cohen's statements by painting him as a liar. This hearing will place the president's alleged crimes and extensive shady dealings - as well as the Russian Federation investigation - at the center of political life in Washington D.C. with potentially major repercussions for the country. But the voters weren't fully aware of its existence.

"I thank Michael Cohen for agreeing to testify before the Oversight Committee voluntarily", said Rep. Elijah Cummings, the House Oversight chairman.

Cohen was a longtime lawyer for President Donald Trump, both before and after Trump ran for office.

At the time of Cohen's sentencing, federal authorities announced a deal not to prosecute American Media Inc.
