HBO announces cast for Game Of Thrones prequel

Following the debut of the first real footage from Game of Thrones season 8 during Sunday's 76th annual Golden Globes Awards, one of HBO's top executives took the opportunity to get fans even more excited about the show's return.

The cable network has tapped Defenders and Jessica Jones director S.J. Clarkson to helm the pilot, from a script by veteran scribe Jane Goldman, who created the series along with the novels' author George R.R. Martin.

Along with the news came a rather substantial casting announcement.

In addition to Naomi Watts and Josh Whitehouse, who were previously announced as the show's leads, the Game of Thrones prequel will also star Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: Episode IX), Denise Gough (Angels in America), Jamie Campbell Bower (The Twilight Saga), Sheila Atim (Harlots), Ivanno Jeremiah (Humans), Georgie Henley (The Chronicles of Narnia), Alex Sharp (How to Talk to Girls at Parties), and Toby Regbo (Reign).

SJ Clarkson has also signed on to direct the pilot, along with being an executive producer. Netflix shows drop all at once and capture the conversation for a weekend and are quickly forgotten, and the sheer number of shows being made means audiences are more spread out among niches than ever before. None of the characters or actors from Game of Thrones will appear in the new show.

Likewise, screenwriter Goldman's pedigree is nothing short of stellar. She'll serve as the series' showrunner.

There are as many as five separate prequels to HBO's hit fantasy series being planned.

On wrapping Game of Thrones: "The last season of Thrones, seemed to be created to break us".

HBO announced the stars that will join the main cast alongside Naomi Watts and Poldark's Josh Whitehouse in the now unnamed prequel, with Gough, who hails from Ennis, Co. It will reveal horrifying secrets of Westeros's history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend.
