Huawei unveils ARM-based CPU for server market

Huawei has pushed its own chips extensively in smartphones and servers and hopes the latest addition to its portfolio will eventually make it one of the top cloud players on the planet.

A month after finding itself at the center of a global diplomatic and media storm, following the arrest of its CFO in Canada, the company has launched what it calls the industry's highest-performance ARM Ltd. chipset, Kunpeng 920.

Designed by Huawei and based on the ARMv8 architecture license, the Kunpeng 920 scores over 930 in the SPECint Benchmarks test- 25 percent higher than the industry average- while power usage is reduced by 30 percent against industry counterparts. The company claims that the Kunpeng 920 "significantly improves processor performance by optimizing branch prediction algorithms, increasing the number of OP units, and improving the memory subsystem architecture", according to a press release.

After a turbulent end to 2018, Huawei sent a business-as-usual message for the New Year as it unveiled a new server chipset at a Shenzhen media event. Huawei is maintaining an open and collaborative stance to encourage an open ecosystem in the industry for the advancement of the ARM-industry and is all too ready to come together with the big players in the said industry for the sole objective of achieving new heights in the field of computing.

Huawei, slowly and gradually is making a move into the server industry. "For example, in big data scenarios, the TaiShan servers are tuned for optimal many-core high concurrency and resource scheduling to deliver a 20 percent computing performance boost".

TaiShan will enable computing platforms with high performance and low power consumption for enterprises. Huawei has invested patiently and intensively in computing innovation to continuously make breakthroughs.

William Xu, Chief Marketing Officer said in a statement that, "Huawei aims to drive the development of the ARM ecosystem".

Huawei believes that an intelligent society with all things connected, sensing, and intelligent is underway, and this trend is picking up speeds. "Huawei and Intel will continue our long-term strategic partnerships and continue to innovate together".

Industry forecasts predict that aggregate data will expand 18-fold between 2018 and 2025, and artificial intelligence (AI) is driving a tenfold annual growth in computing power, Xu told media at Huawei headquarters.

Kunpeng 920 is the industry's highest-performance ARM-based server CPU.
