Japanese Billionaire Promises Cash, Gets Him Most Retweeted Tweet

The Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa has surpassed a chicken-nugget-loving United States teen by posting the most retweeted tweet ever.

As of Monday morning - the deadline given to follow Maezawa's account and repost the message - the post had been retweeted on the social media platform more than 5.4 million times.

Now, he holds the honor of having the most retweeted Twitter post-though there was a financial incentive on offer for those that spread his words.

Founder of Japan's second-largest online shopping site Zozo Inc., Yusaku Maezawa's appeal on Twitter has gone viral and has since been shared by a record 3.8 million times and have given it more than 900,000 "likes". While Wilkinson fell well short of the spoof goal, managing to garner a still-impressive 3.5 million retweets, Wendy's chose to give him the free chicken anyway, presumably in thanks for all the publicity. The post is a celebration of Maezawa's clothing company, Zozotown, making 10 billion yen ($US92 million) in sales over Christmas and New Year's.

This is not Maezawa's first publicity stunt.

The price Mr Maezawa agreed to pay for his ticket to space has not been disclosed, but according to Mr Musk it was "a lot of money".

Known as a passionate art collector, he also plans to take around half a dozen artists with him on the trip.

That puts it ahead of Carter Wilkerson, the Nevada teenager who was hoping for a year's supply of Wendy's chicken nuggets (3.5 million retweets), and Ellen DeGeneres' celeb-packed selfie from the 2014 Oscars (3.3 million).

"18 million", the fast-food company wryly responded to Wilkinson's query.

"HELP ME PLEASE. A MAN NEEDS HIS NUGGS", he wrote at the time.

Mr Maezawa's sharp rise to top spot means former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson moves into fourth position with his 2011 tweet to Harry Styles.

Though he didn't reach the target, Wendy's gave him a year of free nuggets anyway.
