Mourinho free for Real return as United pay compensation

When things went wrong for the former "Special One" at Chelsea the first time it didn't take long till he was in charge at Inter, when it went pear shaped at Real Madrid he was soon back at Chelsea and when the Blues sacked him for a second time it was only six months till he was in charge at Manchester United.

The source explained that Real sounded out Mourinho prior to Solari's hiring, with the Portuguese boss stating his commitment to his job at Old Trafford.

"Now I have the right to relax, wait, have time to critique myself and analyse everything I've gone through in the last few years with calmness, to be able to think and prepare for the next phase of my career".

The Galacticos were beaten 2-0 by Real Sociedad on Sunday as they slipped 10 points behind leaders Barcelona.

Jose Mourinho will join beIN SPORTS, the global sports broadcaster, this week as part of the AFC Asian Cup 2019 and English Premier League coverage, which viewers across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) enjoy exclusively on the leading sports channel.

He has, reportedly, already rejected the opportunity to return to Benfica, the first club he managed.

Real are struggling to claw their way back up the La Liga table under new boss Santiago Solari and are thought to be considering an approach to their former manager, who won La Liga with the club in 2011-12.

"He told them he was the manager of Manchester United and totally committed to the club".

He said: "I have never been into the game of feeding news stories, but I have no intention of working in Portugal".

Recent reports had linked him with the Benfica job after Rui Vitoria was sacked, with club president Luis Filipe Vieira insisting "money would be no object" to a Mourinho return.

Mourinho and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino are the front-runners for the job when Real do make a decision on Lopetegui's long-term successor, but the latter is not available at the moment and is likely to cost more than £40m to get out of his contract in north London. It's not a gamble in the dark, the clubs are trying to hire a player or a coach they know because they've already been there.
