Oakland A's expect Kyler Murray to declare for National Football League draft

Declaring for the draft would not guarantee that Murray would choose football, and the A's would retain his professional rights, even if he tried the NFL first.

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Kyler Murray is reportedly leaning toward entering the 2019 NFL draft and playing football next season rather than immediately pursuing a baseball career with the Oakland Athletics. He also ran for 892 yards and 11 touchdowns.

After his team lost to Alabama in the College Football Playoff semifinal, Murray was mum about his future. Last spring, Murray was a star centerfielder with a.296 batting average and 10 home runs.

The reigning Heisman Trophy victor was selected ninth overall in the 2018 MLB Draft by the A's.

With an award winning-season, there was speculation he'd stay a senior season.

Earlier this week, it was reported Murray would have to pick between baseball and football because of the difficulties that come with learning and playing quarterback in the NFL. (In reality, it'd be slightly higher, as draft bonuses in the National Football League increase incrementally each year just as they do in baseball.) As for fans hoping to see this generation's version of Bo Jackson or Deion Sanders, the report from Slusser and Schulman flatly indicates that there's "no possibility" of Murray playing both sports.

But his agent, Scott Boras, told ESPN on Wednesday night that Murray "has a baseball contract". Spring training begins for the A's on February 15, and it seems unlikely that he would be able to prepare for football's combine at the same time as he was attending his first major league baseball camp. The NFL's scouting combine begins on February 26, which Murray will likely attend if he chooses to go the football route. Position players are scheduled to report on February 15. Will Murray take his talents to the NFL?
