Three dead in double-decker bus crash in Ottawa

The 269 is a "connexion route", operating during morning and evening rush hour, taking people between Mackenzie King station in the capital's downtown and Pinehill/Stonehaven station in Kanata.

He said police are now investigating what caused the collision; six officers were on site to look into the matter.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said more than 20 people had been injured in the collision, noting some of them remain in critical condition.

Starting at 8 a.m., Saturday, Sutcliffe is kicking off the show speaking with Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau.

Police officers, he added, have experience conducting this type of investigation, particularly following an incident in 2013 when an OC Transpo double-decker bus crashed into a Via Rail passenger train in the Ottawa suburb of Barrhaven, killing five passengers and the driver.

The driver was detained at the scene and he was set to be interviewed by police.

"You could see the entire front portion of the bus had been demolished or cut away, and firefighters were on ladders cutting out the top floor windows", he said. "I can't see how they would've been able to get away from that", he said.

"I saw bodies flying out and it was pretty intense at the time", Borle said.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson offered his sympathy on Twitter saying, "Our hearts and condolences go out to all those injured, those who lost their lives as well as to their families".

The Red Cross has a number to call for anyone who suspects a family member may have been injured in the crash. "I have asked staff to ensure all necessary resources are made available to assist them through this hard time", he said.

1310 NEWS' Mark Sutcliffe is set to host two hours of special programming, following a devastating bus crash at Westboro Station.
