At least 10 dead in fire at Brazil's Flamengo soccer training facility

Firefighters say 10 people have died in a fire at a training complex for the football club Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro.

"We can't tell you the cause of the fire, that needs to be investigated", he added. The call for help occurred at 05:17 and the report also states that there are three other people in serious condition.

A fire has engulfed a dormitory at the youth team training centre of one of Brazil's biggest football clubs, killing 10 people. The ages of the injured were 14, 15 and 16, according to a fire official who spoke on condition of anonymity because of agency rules. Overhead images captured by an Associated Press drone showed a smoky, charred area of the complex.

The fire reportedly broke out as players were sleeping.

Some of its most prominent former players include World Cup winners Ronaldinho, Bebeto and Romario, and more recently wonderkid Vincius Jr.

The club spent roughly $6.2 million to expand the training ground known as "Ninho do Urubu" over the past year.

The site features accommodation for young players, several pitches, an aquatic park, a gym, a medical centre and a mini stadium.

The Ninho do Urubu, or Vulture's Nest, gets its name from the club's symbol - a vulture.

The Rio de Janeiro governor, Wilson Witzel, has declared three days of mourning for the deaths of those affected by the floods and the fire.

While there is still no information on what caused the blaze, it was brought under control within two hours.

Jefferson Rodrigues, who runs a small inn near the club, said he had reached a 15-year-old player he had befriended.

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, who trained at the centre while being a part of Flamengo's youth academy before moving to Spain, tweeted: "What sad news!" The facility was closed, and no officials had come out to address media. "He lost his phone, and all of his things, but the important thing is he is alive".

Joao Pedro da Cruz, a 16-year-old player in the Flamengo youth league, told G1 news portal that he decided not to stay the night at the facility Thursday because the team wasn't going to train on Friday.

The main team had been due to practice at the same facility later in the morning.
