Google Reportedly Planning Cheaper Smartphone to Bring Users into Its Ecosystem

Google is continuing its dip into hardware this year, in an attempt to draw more users into its ecosystem, according to a report from Nikkei. That seems to suggest that previously rumored 'Pixel Lite' handset is coming but shouldn't be expected to arrive until Google's annual hardware event much later in the year.

It's unclear exactly what hardware upgrades would be featured in the new Pixel-branded security cameras.

Since the flagship version of the vanilla Google Pixel 3 came in third place - but at 25 percent of the vote, which is not far at all from the second place victor - we can also assume that those of you who want a smaller phone aren't ready to give up flagship features to get it.

The Google smartwatch - which would likely be called the Pixel Watch, if Google sticks to its conventions - has been bandied about since last July.

Google Pixel 3 was announced back in October and presented Android fans with a number of notable improvements from its predecessor. Google doesn't want to wait for more time to launch its wearable device in the market. Pricing information isn't yet concrete but the expectation is that Google will undercut Apple's iPhone XR by a significant margin.

Google Home will also see an update according to the report. With Nest merged into Google proper any new hardware out of that department would be courtesy of Google at some level, and Nest releases new cams all the time.
