Marlins Trade J.T. Realmuto To Phillies After Offseason Full Of Rumors

The Phillies and Marlins have reached a trade that sends All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto to Philadelphia for catcher Jorge Alfaro, pitching prospects Sixto Sanchez and Will Stewart, and an global bonus slot, the teams announced Thursday. But it was only within the past week that the Phillies resurfaced, swooping in to acquire the much-coveted catcher. With spring training opening next week for teams across the majors, trade talks intensified. All reports indicate the trade will include top pitching prospect Sixto Sanchez.

Sanchez is thought to be the Marlins' prized acquisition in the Realmuto trade.

The scout said his only concern with Sanchez is his health.

The 2018 season was Alfaro's first full year in the big leagues. The Marlins, well, they're the laughingstock of baseball, years away from relevance. He's expected to start this year in Double-A, and Stewart will begin in Single-A.

"In Sanchez we saw a front-of-the-rotation starter", Hill said. Electric stuff. Three pitch mix. "From our standpoint, we felt like we added two frontline starting pitcher to add to the layers of starting pitching that we've been able to build over the last 18 months". He smashed 21 home runs to go along with 74 runs batted in and a.277 average. He will make $5.9 million in 2019, and he can become a free agent after the 2020 season. His major drawback as a hitter is his high strikeout rate. But he also struck out 138 times in 377 at-bats. Alfaro won't be eligible for arbitration until the 2021 season and has five years of team control remaining.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post cites multiple sources (Twitter link) for the proposition that the negotiations are "down to physical reviews" and the supplemental prospect pieces in the swap.

Hill said trading Realmuto to a team within the same division was never a concern.

"He's been playing half his game in Miami", Klentak said. "This is about us getting better and we believe it improves us considerably".

Realmuto was a first-time All-Star in his fourth season past year.

Now that he's no longer a Marlin, will Realmuto and Berry back off that stance?

For his career, Realmuto's 59 moonshots, 243 runs batted in, and.279 don't match up with his recent career year at the plate.
