Memphis Grizzlies to trade Marc Gasol to Toronto Raptors

Valanciunas, 26, was drafted by the Raptors in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2011 National Basketball Association entry draft and is in his seventh season with the team.

The Raptors are planning to deal away their former fifth overall draft pick (2011) Jonas Valanciunas along with Delon Wright and C.J. Miles to Memphis.

Gasol, 34, is a three-time All-Star and was the league's Defensive Player of the Year in 2012-13. They had resisted the idea of trading Gasol or Mike Conley for a few years, but their big swoon this season made them finally face reality; trying to build around that duo no longer made sense.

Gasol is 7-foot-1 and averaging 15.7 points and 8.6 rebounds in 53 games this season. The Memphis Grizzlies are sending their star big to the Toronto Raptors.

Jonas Valanciunas had been sidelined since December 12 (Dec. 13, PHL time) with a dislocated left thumb.

The trade comes after a flurry of activity in the Eastern Conference that saw several potential playoff opponents of the Raptors make moves to bolster their squads. Nurse hasn't been afraid to use the regular season as a test lab for various lineup constructions and playing styles, a strategy he'll no doubt continue experimenting with after the acquisition of Gasol.

"I've been in rumours so many times I don't even look at it", Valanciunas said. We have a good future in front of us for this season so I just want to go on the court and play ball and win the games.

The 26-year-old Wright, who was selected by Toronto in the first round of the 2015 draft, is averaging 6.9 points, 2.2 assists and 2.6 rebounds in 18.3 minutes of action per game this season.
