Ocasio-Cortez's Green New Deal: What's in it

Pelosi has long championed stronger environmental rules, and described climate change as her "flagship" political issue. As Executive Director Alexandra Rojas explained, "The Green New Deal offers a positive solution to match the scale of our nation's biggest crises - climate change, structural racism, and skyrocketing inequality". She said Pelosi asked her to serve on the committee, but she declined because it focuses on investigations.

"The public is much more aware of the challenge that we face and that is a good thing", Pelosi, a California Democrat, said.

"Even the solutions that we have considered big and bold are nowhere near the scale of the actual problem that climate change presents to us", Ocasio-Cortez told NPR's Steve Inskeep during an interview on Thursday morning. Will all of the expertise that goes into a Green New Deal eventually include proofreaders? Although it is unclear how many of Ocasio-Cortez's fellow Democrats will embrace these specific policy ideas, a number of Democratic presidential hopefuls have endorsed the concept of a Green New Deal, including Sens. But she welcomes "the enthusiasm that is there".

Ouch. Ocasio-Cortez can argue today that Pelosi's wrong about not knowing what it is, at least. Pelosi also named her Democratic members who will be on the Select Committee on Climate Crisis, with Ocasio-Cortez's name noticeably absent.

The plan is meant to address the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which said global temperatures must be kept less than 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels to avoid the most severe impacts of a changing climate, the authors of the policy said.

Despite not being on the congressional panel, Ocasio-Cortez continues to say that the speaker supports her efforts to push forward the Green New Deal and other climate change initiatives. It was created to examine new climate change policies and does not have the sole goal of focusing on the Green New Deal, another complaint from the supporters of the proposal. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, Suzanne Bonamici of Oregon, Julia Brownley of California, Sean Casten of Illinois, Jared Huffman of California, Mike Levin of California, Donald McEachin of Virginia and Joe Neguse of Colorado.

Pelosi said the new panel, which also will include six Republicans, "will be vital in advancing ambitious progress for our planet". But the freshman congresswoman from NY introduced a Green New Deal resolution on Thursday that is already emerging as a key policy test for 2020 Democratic candidates.

But much of the Green New Deal has been viewed by more moderate lawmakers as radical and unrealistic, who say the goal for America to become 100 percent renewable energy dependent with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in 10 years is next to impossible. It's aimed a transforming the American economy by ending its dependence on fossil fuels, investing heavily in renewable energy like solar and wind and sparking large-scale job-creation. Trump, who has expressed doubts about climate change, also is likely to oppose it.
