Trading Foles: Here is how the Eagles can pull it off

On Tuesday, the Eagles exercised the $20 million option on Foles' contract for the 2019 season.

The Eagles could still place their franchise tag on the backup quarterback with the intention of trading him.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the Eagles are looking for a third-round pick for the 30-year-old. He is poised to become an unrestricted free agent pending a potential buy out and the use of the franchise tag, which has caused the debate to rage: Is Foles more valuable to Philadelphia than Wentz? He is expected to command a contract worth more than $18 million per season. Foles also came in for the Eagles towards the end of the regular season this past year and threw for 1,413 yards and seven touchdowns in five games. Again, however, dictating where Foles goes, especially through the tag, would require some salary-cap gymnastics from Roseman and company. In turn, the former Super Bowl victor opted out of his contract - deciding to pay back $2 million of his 2018 signing bonus.

The story, which included anonymous quotes from Eagles players and team sources, received major pushback from the Eagles organization.

After the 2018 season, Eagles coach Doug Pederson said Wentz would be the starting quarterback in 2019.

If the Eagles put the franchise tag on Foles, he signs it and then refuses to agree to a new deal, the Eagles might be stuck with Foles on the roster for one year at $25 million.

In the wake of that report, several Eagles players defended Wentz.

Or as one National Football League executive indicated Wednesday: "I think Howie is overthinking this". He said there were no verbal altercations, there was never any "bullying" of offensive coordinator Mike Groh and never once did he object to a play because it was designed for Foles. Those two moves give the Eagles a fairly easy path to the $15 million they would need right there.
