Trump calls for end of resistance politics in State of Union

"We must reject the politics of revenge, resistance and retribution, and embrace the boundless potential of cooperation, compromise and the common good", Trump said in his State of the Union address. The stock market, meanwhile, is down more than 3 percent since Trump's last State of the Union address, due to uncertainty about Trump's trade policy.

With newly empowered House Democrats in front of him, Trump inflated the threat of immigrants entering the country unlawfully and sought to make an emotional appeal to the public at large by highlighting guests, seated with first lady Melania Trump, who have suffered the costs of illegal immigration. Trump resisted any shots at Abrams leading up to their prime-time juxtaposition.

Pelosi and Trump have repeatedly clashed in recent weeks.

Sparring over the president's proposed border wall led to a record 35-day partial shutdown of the federal government over Congress' inability to pass a spending package that included the funds he has claimed is necessary to build his wall along the southern border.

But Trump devoted more than one-fifth of the address to border security, using the national platform and the captive audience of lawmakers - allies and foes - to press his case for a border wall.

Despite the fierce partisan disagreements, Trump's speech will feature prominent calls for bipartisanship and unity - a sharp contrast in tone from the president's usual insults and name-calling on Twitter. "Tonight, we renew our resolve that America will never be a socialist country".

Trump has promised to massively increase tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods if the two sides can not reach an agreement by March 1.

Foreign policy, including Trump's talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, will be a heavy focus of the speech.

"In the past, most of the people in this room voted for a wall".

The summit could help break a deadlock in U.S.

"Now is the time for Congress to show the world that America is committed to ending illegal immigration and putting the ruthless coyotes, cartels, drug dealers and human traffickers out of business", Trump said in his address.

Last month, USA officials announced progress on a framework deal under which the US would withdraw its troops from Afghanistan in exchange for Taliban promises that the country would not be used by terrorists. "Great nations do not fight endless wars", Trump will say - comments that could upset many in Congress.

Aides have reportedly prepared plans and draft language for such an emergency, but Republican leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), have warned the president that such a measure could backfire by splitting the GOP between border hawks who support it and others who fear it would set a bad precedent as an executive branch power grab.

Trump will speak about the future of the ongoing conflicts overseas in Syria and Afghanistan.
