Collins to sign 6-year deal with Washington

While the Chiefs have huge needs in the safety department, there is no way they could possibly pay Collins that deal.

The Washington Redskins are set to make a massive free-agent splash, agreeing Monday to a six-year, $84-million deal with former New York Giants safety Landon Collins, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. However, he became a free agent this offseason after NY opted not to place the franchise tag on him.

No safety in National Football League history has signed a deal larger than the $78 million contract Eric Berry agreed to with the Chiefs, according to Over The Cap.

He underwent surgery late past year and is expected to be cleared for football drills this offseason.

Collins, 25, made three consecutive Pro Bowls in his last three seasons as a member of the Giants.

Defensive coordinator James Bettcher used Collins primarily near the line of scrimmage this past season.

The biggest question mark around Collins was expected to be whether or not the Giants would tag him.

Collins, who is a natural strong safety, had been hopeful for a significant payday, looking to receive top safety money.

The Giants will now have to play against the three-time Pro Bowler twice a year moving forward, which is a double loss for NY, who now has another gaping hole on a defense devoid of big-time play-makers. In his first four seasons, he had 428 combined tackles, 321 solo tackles, eight interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) and three forced fumbles.
