Dallas Cowboys should pursue Eric Berry as a fallback plan

"Knowing what Eric has meant to this organization and this city made this an incredibly hard decision".

The Kansas City Chiefs continued to reshape their defense on Wednesday, as they released star safety Eric Berry. He suffered a torn ACL in the team's opener and missed the entire year.

It will be intriguing to see what kind of interest Berry generates on the open market, especially considering the veteran safety was limited to four total games over the past two seasons combined.

He earned five trips to the Pro Bowl in his time with the Chiefs.

During his time with the Chiefs, Berry overcame Hodgkin's-Lymphoma to get back on the field.

"I'd like to thank Eric for his contributions to our team and the Kansas City community over the last nine years", Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid said. The 6-foot, 210-pounder, who was originally the fifth pick in the 2010 National Football League draft out of Tennessee, has been named All-Pro three times and to the Pro Bowl five times during his nine-year tenure with the team.

He also earned the team's Derrick Thomas Award in 2015 and 2016, given to the team's most valuable player, voted on by his teammates. "He will always be an important part of our Chiefs family, and we wish him nothing but the best in the future". He has participated in only three of the Chiefs' last 34 contests, including the postseason.

The team also recently released linebacker Justin Houston, freeing up $21.1 million in their salary cap.

The move comes with the team set to add Tyrann Mathieu, who agreed to a three-year, $42 million contract this week.

While finances were a major consideration in the Chiefs' recent moves, including the trade of top pass rusher Dee Ford to San Francisco, so has the way the roster had been constructed.
