Heartache in Toronto in wake of deadly New Zealand mosque shootings

"The United States strongly condemns the attack in Christchurch".

There was a heavy police presence at the hospital where families of the wounded had gathered.

These nihilist, clash-of-civilisations narratives - whichever ideologies inform them - leave all nations more vulnerable to extremist violence. "For people of all religions and of none, a red line has been crossed".

Friday prayers at the Windsor Mosque on March 15, 2019, a day after a gunman killed 49 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. "We stand in solidarity with the people of New Zealand and their government against this vicious act of hate". The inverse of this phenomenon is, of course, that it gives oxygen to the propaganda machine of radical fringe elements spreading hatred against the West and religious minorities in Muslim countries, thus perpetuating an unending cycle of hate.

"I blame these increasing terror attacks on the current Islamophobia post-9/11", Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan posted on social media.

He travelled more frequently in the past two years on what he said were reconnaissance trips to mosques, working out which to target, according to a detailed manifesto he wrote spelling out sickening reasons for the mass Christchurch executions.

Hundreds of angry protesters in Dhaka, Bangladesh's capital, chanted "Allahu akbar!"

The attacks happened during midday prayers.

"It is clear this is one of New Zealand's darkest days", Ardern said earlier Friday.

The Palestinian chief peace negotiator, Saeb Erekat, called the attack a "consequence of racist ideologies that continue trying to promote religious wars".

Canadian Muslims have expressed their sadness and shock at the shooting deaths of 49 worshippers at two mosques in New Zealand.

New Zealand is also generally considered to be welcoming to migrants and refugees.

Citing right-wing U.S. commentator Candace Owens as an inspiration, Tarrant also claimed he had been in brief contact with Anders Breivik, the far-right extremist who killed 77 people in attacks in Norway in 2011.

Among the wounded, two were in a critical condition, including a four-year-old child.
