Johnny Manziel signs contract with AAF

Memphis, which lost 22-9 to Salt Lake on Saturday, has already used Christian Hackenberg, Zach Mettenberger and former Troy standout Brandon Silvers at quarterback this season.

Johnny Football is heading to Memphis to resume his football career.

Manziel, 26, was the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy.

Johnny Manziel appears to be headed for the Alliance of American Football.

Just weeks after he was released by his Canadian Football League team and essentially banned from signing anywhere else, the former Heisman Trophy victor gets yet another shot to show that he has something left in the tank. The former Texas A&M Heisman Trophy victor was released from his CFL contract last month, with league officials announcing he had "contravened the agreement which made him eligible to play in the league". The Express next plays vs. Birmingham on March 24 in Memphis.

The statement from the Alliance said that Manziel "will report to Memphis tomorrow, where we all believe he'll benefit from the coaching and mentorship of Mike Singletary". He was traded to the Alouettes in 2018 and released on February 27.

He was taken with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2014 National Football League draft by Cleveland. He also ran for 215 yards on 29 carries as Montreal (5-13) missed the CFL playoffs.

CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie announced in December 2017 that the league would approve a contract for Manziel, who at the time was on the Tiger-Cats' negotiation list.

Manziel eventually ended up signing with Hamilton in May 2018 but was unable to get on to the field behind starter Jeremiah Masoli. It was his first football action since he was released by the NFL's Cleveland Browns following the 2015 season.

Manziel was released by the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League earlier this month.
