Man Reportedly Arrested in Killing of Alleged Mob Boss in Staten Island

Cali was widely viewed as the leader of the notorious Gambino crime family. Comello was allegedly upset by Cali's family standing in the way of that. The Gambino crime boss was assassinated outside Sparks Steakhouse in Manhattan in 1985. When Cali tried to hide behind his vehicle, Comello allegedly ran him over.

At his home in Brick, N.Y., members of the New York/New Jersey Regional Task Force picked up the Staten Island man, who has been identified by WNBC-TV and the New York Daily News as Anthony Camello.

The 53-year-old Cali, who was shot to death on Wednesday outside his Staten Island home, was allegedly the head of the Gambino family, one of the five Italian-American Mafia families that have historically dominated organized crime in NY and New Jersey. In a statement, police said the investigation is still in progress and an arrest has not yet been made.

"He has a conversation with an individual in front of that residence and that individual at some point in time, it's only about a minute into it, pulls out a firearm and shots are fired", said NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea.

Comello's Facebook page said he once attended Tottenville High School on Staten Island.

Asked about Comello's arrest record, Shea said he "crossed paths in some limited circumstances with the NYPD" including getting a parking ticket on Staten Island the day Cali was killed.

Cali, a native of the Italian island Sicily, served in the organization's ruling panel for years before replacing Domenico Cefalu in 2015.

As news of the arrest emerged on social media, the daughter of late Gambino godfather, John Gotti, tweeted "I can't wait to see ALL the apologies to my uncle".

But they now believe a personal dispute was to blame - over a woman in Cali's family, according to multiple law enforcement sources. Without making further presumptions over the case, it might be worth reporting the details which have come to light since Frank Cali's death.
