Mercer Global Survey: US Ranks Low in Quality of Living

Once again, Singapore has been named the city with the best quality of life in Asia, according to a survey published by human-resources consultancy Mercer. Chennai was ranked Southern Asia's safest city while Karachi is the least safe. For the tenth year in a row, Austrian capital Vienna topped the ranking, followed by Zurich (Switzerland), while joint third place went to Vancouver (Canada), Auckland (Australia) and Munich (Germany).

Kyiv placed 173 out of 231 in the quality of living ranking, as Mercer company reported. As for Asia, Singapore (25th) has the highest quality of living, followed by the five Japanese cities of Tokyo (49th), Kobe (49th), Yokohama (55th), Osaka (58th), and Nagoya (62nd). Elsewhere, Uruguay's capital Montevideo was the highest ranked in South America, while Port Louis, Mauritius, was Africa's top city.

In this year's Mercer report, the strong European performance was contrasted by declining fortunes for USA cities, which all dropped except for NY (44th), where the ongoing decrease in crime rates allowed it to jump a spot.

The survey considered several factors to determine the quality of living in each city. Phnom Penh ranks lowest for personal safety, while safety continues to be an issue in the central Asian cities of Almaty, Tashkent, Ashgabat, Dushanbe and Bishkek. Western Europe dominates this ranking, however Brussels (47th place) falls considerably between 2005 and 2019 due to terrorist attacks, and Greece (102nd place) also takes a dive due to its slow recovery from the global financial crisis. The same result was reached previous year.

Vienna in Austria has been ranked as the best city in the world in terms of quality of living while Baghdad in Iraq came last at 231. The Middle East's safest cities are Dubai (73) and Abu Dhabi (73). As many as 13 of the world's top 20 spots were taken by European cities.
