Pi Day: Google calculates most accurate value of Pi

Pi Day: Google calculates most accurate value of Pi

Today is 14 March, also known as Pi Day (due to being written as 3/14 in the United States). Over the 121.1 days, Google used 96 vCPUs, 1.4 TB of RAM, read 9.02 PB of data, and wrote 7.95 PB.

Iwao, a computer scientist and software engineer whose official title is cloud developer advocate, used y-cruncher, a program created by US software developer Alexander J. Yee that has been used in many previous pi record breakings.

A Google employee has broken the world record for calculating pi just in time for the mind-bogglingly long number's special day.

Iwao and a Google team computed Pi to 31.4 trillion decimal places or Pi multiplied by 10 to the 13th power, ousting the previous record set in 2016 of 22.4 trillion digits. As a kid, she even downloaded a computer program to calculate pi.

Pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.

Google announced her achievement Thursday - but Iwao has been striving toward this moment since she was 12 years old.

Her milestone is certified by Guinness World Records, making Iwao the third woman to set a world record for determining the number that continues infinitely without repetition. She took 25 Google Cloud virtual machines and 170 terabytes of data to complete the calculation for the record. The semi-official holiday for the unique number is celebrated by eating actual pies. "The biggest challenge is you need a lot of storage".

Beyond being a convenient way to promote Google's own cloud products, Iwao's record shows how far cloud computing technology has come.

'I was very fortunate that there were Japanese world record holders that I could relate to myself.

For years, mathematicians and computer scientists have raced to calculate ever more digits of Pi. She said Google Compute Engine helped reach the record-breaking number because it allowed the application to run without interruption from "hardware failures or underlying software maintenance".
