SpaceX rocket with unmanned U.S. capsule blasts off for space station

The launch of the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule atop a Falcon 9 rocket to the International Space Station from Pad 39A at Kenned. The launch was a success and the Crew craft arrived at the International Space Station early Sunday where it's expected to stay docked for five days before it autonomously undocks and returns to Earth.

Last week, upon completing its pre-launch reviews, NASA estimated that if the demonstration flight went well we could see crewed flights within a few months. "Congratulations to all for this historic achievement getting us closer to flying American Astronauts on American rockets".

Ever since NASA retired the space shuttle in 2011, the United States has been hitching rides to and from the space station aboard Russian Soyuz spacecraft. NASA astronauts Doug Hurley, left, and Bob Behnken attend a news conference before the Falcon 9 SpaceX Crew Demo-1 rocket lau. The capsule is the first American spacecraft which can carry a crew that has been designed in nearly a decade. Liftoff was at 2:49 a.m., EST, March 2, 2019.

SpaceX already has made 16 trips to the space station using cargo Dragons.

A SpaceX rocket with an unmanned crew capsule blasted off on Saturday for the International Space Station, in a key milestone for Elon Musk's space company and NASA's long-delayed goal to resume human spaceflight from USA soil later this year. "I thought maybe we'd have a 10 percent chance of reaching orbit starting out", Silicon Valley billionaire Musk said of his feelings when he founded the space company in 2002. A sensor-laden mannequin named Ripley and floating Earth plush toy in the cockpit measured the noises and stresses. In a docking with a crew aboard, the capsule would likewise operate on its own, though the astronauts might push a button or two and would be able to intervene if necessary. TV cameras on Dragon as well as the station provided stunning views of one another throughout the rendezvous.

Barely two hours after the fact, the space station's three group people - American Anne McClain, Canadian David Saint-Jacques and Russian Oleg Kononenko - opened the bring forth of the space container and, out of the blue, infiltrated its inside in space.

The launch systems are aimed at ending USA reliance on Russian rockets for rides to the $100 billion orbital research laboratory, which flies about 250 miles (400 km) above Earth, at about $80 million per ticket.

A new experimental type of deep space communications technology is scheduled to be demonstrated on the International Space Station this spring.

Bridenstine said he's confident that astronauts will soar on a Dragon or Starliner - or both - by year's end. They burst into applause again, several minutes later, when the Dragon's latches were tightly secured.
