Beresheet preparing for lunar landing

SpaceIL was a competitor in Google's Lunar X-Prize competition.

According to an update released by the spacecraft's designers and manufacturers, SpaceIL and Israel Aerospace Industries, Beresheet lowered its altitude above the moon during the maneuver, as it prepares for the landing.

Beresheet will also be the first privately-owned object to land on the Lunar surface, but carries a scientific payload that will measure the Moon's magnetic field that should help scientists understand how the Moon was originally formed. The name בראשית is prounounced "beresheet" and is roughly translated from Hebrew to English to mean "Genesis" - aka the beginning.

Kahn is expected to speak about the mission and answer questions in an interactive YouTube Live session at 7 pm IST (4.30 pm local time in Israel).

At the point at which this article is first posted, the SpaceIL crew had not yet landed on the moon.

Israel's unmanned Beresheet spacecraft completed another maneuver Tuesday morning Israel time, its penultimate one ahead of the expected landing on the moon late Thursday.

Of the seven nations that have entered the moon's orbit, only the U.S., Russian Federation and China succeeded in landing on the moon. They're also poised to be the first ever private group (non-governmental group) to land a spacecraft on the moon.

It took about nine minutes for eight engines to slowly maneuver the spacecraft in the right direction, and a little less than six minutes for the engines to slow the spacecraft down to the correct speed. Together with four other teams - Moon Express, Synergy Moon, Teamindus, and Hakuto - SpaceIL raced to develop low-priced methods of robotic space exploration.
