Endangered mountain gorillas 'pose' for selfie with rangers

The image was taken at a gorilla orphanage in Virunga National Park, DR Congo, where the animals were raised after poachers killed their parents.

Lately, the world has come to know them for their part in a selfie that two rangers took in the national park, which was posted to its Facebook page on Sunday.

While the selfie shows the lighter side of being a ranger, it can be a risky job.

The selfie taken by Ranger Mathieu Shamavu quickly went viral during the past week for obvious reasons. Stay safe and thank you for the unbelievable work you do'.

"YES, it's real", the Virunga National Park later posted on their Instagram.

In total, 179 rangers have died in the line of duty. The caretakers at Senkwekwe take great care to not put the health of the gorillas in danger.

In April of 2018, five park rangers and one driver were killed in an ambush in Virunga.

It has attracted thousands of responses, with many praising the conservationists' work and pledging to donate.

Beside the photo captioned, "another day at the office", and Facebook user commented: "Wow, that is an unbelievable office you've got there".

Abase Carrimo, a Mozambican Ranger, passed away after he was struck by a lightning.

Proud to stand next to the survivors, in one selfie, a young man contains a grin, as he stands next to a gorilla on its legs, appearing very much like a human. "In this case, it was a hippo mother, who had a calf with her".

Another man, Ranger Freddy Mahamba Muliro, died in early March defending the park from an attack. The park quickly addressed those concerns.

According to the park, the gorillas copy caretakers that they see standing upright. The national park is world-famous for its population of rare gorillas. In altitude, it ranges from 680 m in the Semliki River valley to 5,109 m in the Rwenzori Mountain.

The Virunga national park is situated in the East of the DRC and was established in 1925 to preserve the giant primates.

The gorillas have lived in the sanctuary since infancy.
