Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp down in several countries

The three media platforms are all experiencing issues since this morning for users worldwide.

Facebook acquired Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014.

Last month, Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg shared his vision to shift the social network more towards private messaging, outlining how encryption and integrated messaging across Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp could work in the future. Downdetector.com's live blackout map demonstrated that the issues were predominantly in the region of Europe and Asia.

The website wouldn't refresh, and messages weren't coming through, from roughly 6:30 AM EDT (New York time) to about 9:30 AM.

"Earlier today, some people may have experienced trouble connecting to the family of apps".

This weekend, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp all went down for many users, rendering the applications completely unusable for hours.

Lesego Semenya said: "Seems Facebook, WhatsApp and Insta are all down". The issue has since been resolved; we're sorry for any inconvenience.

The outage tracking website downdetector.com showed that there are more than 9000 people reporting issues with Facebook.

The outage occurred in the early hours in the Americas, according to the site.

Facebook will likely issue comments on the outage via its Twitter accounts, but it may be a while before those statements are published.
