John's hires Mike Anderson as basketball coach

Anderson was sacked at Arkansas in March after eight seasons and a 169-102 record that included three trips to the NCAA Tournament.

"I got a call Wednesday and I'm up here right now and I'm going to be the head coach of St. John's", the 59-year-old Anderson said in Friday's Madison Square Garden press conference. With his hiring at St. John's, Arkansas is now off the hook for Anderson's buyout.

St. John's landed on former UAB/Missouri/Arkansas coach Mike Anderson, who was officially introduced as the Red Storm's coach on Friday afternoon.

It didn't take long for former Arkansas basketball coach Mike Anderson to land on his feet and now he's headed to the Big Apple. "This basketball program is rooted with such great tradition and it has a history built by legendary coaches, so this is a humbling experience".

The Red Storm have struggled to find a replacement for Chris Mullin, who stepped down as St. John's coach on April 9 after four seasons and two NCAA tournament appearances.

Arizona State's Bobby Hurley, Iona's Tim Cluess and Loyola-Chicago's Porter Moser all chose to remain with their respective teams rather than taking over the Red Storm.

Anderson was hired as Red Storm coach on Friday after he was sacked by Arkansas last month.

Anderson does have nine trips to March Madness in his coaching career, including a Sweet 16 trip with UAB in 2004 and an Elite Eight appearance at Missouri in 2009. We are confident that his extensive coaching experience, recruiting acumen and skill development program will elevate St. John's basketball to new heights.

Arizona State's Bobby Hurley and Loyola-Chicago's Porter Moser were reportedly targeted by St. John's before it decided on Anderson, who has a 369-200 record in 17 seasons. But while at Arkansas, Anderson had the second most wins in the SEC in those eight years; only Kentucky won more league games than the Hogs.
