"This fire is nowhere under control - it's getting worse before our eyes", said CNN correspondent Melissa Bell.

"So awful to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris".

Officials said it could be linked to renovation work, the BBC reported.

Dramatic images posted to social media showed the roof of the medieval cathedral engulfed in flames.

One of the cathedral's spires is smothered in flames.

It's unclear if anyone has been hurt.

The blaze then spread and enveloped a large portion of the roof.

French president Emmanuel Macron has cancelled a planned address to the nation due to the fire.

Notre Dame is a historic cathedral known for its French Gothic architecture.

The cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century, was made famous for featuring in Victor Hugo's novel "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame".
