Powerful, deadly storms sweep across the South

A line of powerful storms with heavy winds is expected to batter the New Orleans metro area Saturday night into Sunday morning, the National Weather Service said. Some storms will be strong/severe.

MS saw heavy rains and flooding, and in the Vicksburg area, about a 45-minute drive from Jackson, a possible tornado touched down, according to NWS meteorologist John Moore. The main time line would be from 2P-8P.

The Robertson County Sheriff's Office said that the tornado was spotted near FM 485, 1644, and FM 46.

In addition to the potential for tornado development, the strong line of storms will also produce damaging winds and heavy rain, capable of producing flash floods, particularly in Arkansas and parts of MS and Alabama.

The National Weather Service of Fort Worth went on to rate the tornado an EF-3, with 140 miles per hour winds. Trees were pulled up by the roots, roofs torn off buildings and the cinder block foundation was all that was left of a mobile home in the town, which is southeast of Waco.

Authorities said 13-year-old Sebastian Omar Martinez drowned in a drainage canal after flash flooding struck Bawcomville, near Monroe, said Deputy Glenn Springfield of the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Department. A spokeswoman for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said authorities were in Hamilton and could not be reached for confirmation.

A major severe weather outbreak is underway to our southwest.

But tornadoes aren't the only possible cause of destruction Sunday.

The energy from warm afternoon temperatures will diminish, but the risk for tornadoes will not be over. Violent weather is unlikely to be as widespread as Saturday, but some of Sunday's storms may be intense.

Both Franklin and a neighboring town lost electricity as a result of the storm, leaving 3,088 customers without power on Sunday, reported CNN.

"We were hit really, really, hard".

As the storm moved into Alabama, a possible tornado knocked out power and damaged mobile homes in Troy, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Montgomery. Trees were down throughout the hilly city on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi.

"Damaging winds and a couple of tornadoes will be the primary hazards, but isolated hail may accompany the strongest [storms]", the Storm Prediction Center wrote.
