Pulitzer Prizes award Aretha Franklin a special citation for music

The winners of the 2019 Pulitzer Prizes were announced today, and those honored included reporters covering mass shootings and investigating the president.

The Capital Gazette in Annapolis won a special Pulitzer Prize citation for its coverage and courage in the face of one of the deadliest attacks on journalists in American history.

The Pulitzers also honor the best in literature, theater, and music.

The AP's global reporting prize went to a team of journalists who spent a year documenting atrocities and suffering in Yemen, illuminating the human toll of its four-year-old civil war.

Winners in the field of news reporting included the Wall Street Journal for its investigations of hush money payments orchestrated by the president's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, to silence women who claimed to have had affairs with the Donald Trump before he was the United States president.

The Los Angeles Times' report on a University of Southern California gynecologist who allegedly abused hundreds of young women earned a prize for investigative reporting.

Novelist Richard Powers won the Pulitzer for fiction for "The Overstory", a panoramic look at nine Americans whose lives become entwined due to their experiences with trees, and David W. Blight picked up the prize in history for his acclaimed biography "Frederick Douglas".

In general non-fiction, the prize went to Eliza Griswold for 'Amity and Prosperity: One Family and the Fracturing of America'. The team won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in global reporting for their work documenting torture, graft and starvation in Yemen's brutal civil war.

Franklin is one of less than a dozen musicians - and the first female artist - to receive the Pulitzers' Special Citation for the arts; previous winners include Rodgers & Hammerstein, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Bob Dylan and, most recently in 2010, Hank Williams.

Reuters was also recognized for global reporting for covering the brutal crackdown on Rohingya Muslims by security forces in Buddhist-majority Myanmar.

Also, composer, Ellen Reid was also awarded this year's Pulitzer music award for her opera "Prism, " which premiered at the Los Angeles Opera last fall.

Aretha Franklin died on August 16, 2018, at her home in Detroit.

Drury's "Fairview" brings the story of African-Americans into the present, skewering white people's obsession with black stereotypes.

The play was originally commissioned and produced by Soho Rep and Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

The poetry prize was won by Forrest Gander for 'Be With'.

The first Pulitzer Prizes were awarded in 1917, and they have come to be considered the field's most prestigious honor in the U.S.
