Stones speak up ahead of Mick Jagger Heart Surgery

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger will undergo surgery this week to replace a valve in his heart, confirmed Rolling Stone magazine on Monday after the news was first revealed by the Drudge Report.

Due to the nature of the surgery and subsequent recovery period, the band postponed its upcoming North American summer tour.

Referring to their 75-year-old frontman, they continued: "Mick has been advised by doctors that he can not go on tour at this time, as he needs medical treatment".

Mick also issued a statement to fans over the weekend, expressing his disappointment at cancelling the shows and promising to return to the stage as soon as possible.

According to the New York Post's "Page Six" site, Jagger has a damaged valve in his heart, and is set to receive a stent, sparking worries about the veteran musician's health.

"I'm so sorry to all our fans in America & Canada with tickets, I really hate letting you down like this", explained Jagger.

Jagger has eight children, five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter, but has maintained his energetic stage performances well into his 70s, playing Britain's Glastonbury Festival in 2013. That could include Jagger strutting back on the stage for the band's tour. The four valves include the mitral valve, tricuspid valve, pulmonary valve and aortic valve.

L-R: Ronnie Wood, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts pose as they arrive for the opening of the new exhibit "Exhibitionism: The Rolling Stones" in Manhattan, New York in 2016.

"This allows the person to be back home in a day or two".

One less-invasive procedure is called transcatheter aortic valve replacement or TAVR.

Heart valve problems had until recent years meant serious open heart surgery. The tube can be inserted into an artery in the groin or via a small incision in the chest.

Heart valve surgery is needed when the heart valve has built up calcium over time.
