2 bodies found at home of woman in German crossbow case

The identity of the women found in Wittingen and any possible connection to the events in Passau have still to be established, police said.

Forensic police officers were combing both crime scenes on Monday for clues.

Hotel staff discovered the bodies in a room alongside two crossbows, the German news agency DPA reported.

A third crossbow was later found packed inside a bag, police said.

The relationship between the three victims - a man in his fifties and two women aged 30 and 33 - was not immediately clear.

The man and the older woman were found lying on the bed on Saturday, holding hands with multiple bolts in them, while the younger woman lay on the floor with a single bolt wound.

When the maid first looked into the second floor room, she thought the figure on the bed was a doll and called a colleague to help push the door open.

The hotel is by the Ilz river near Passau, about 650km (400 miles) south of Wittingen.

The man, who was dressed in a suit had a long, white beard, while the two women were dressed in black, witnesses told German daily Bild.

The guests had booked a triple room for three nights, arriving on Friday evening.

Local press reports that none of the other guests heard any odd noises overnight, though the storm and the fast-flowing river beside the guesthouse might have muffled any noise.

The case, which has confused police, has reportedly led to the discovery of two more bodies in the city of Wittingen, Lower Saxony roughly 650 kilometres away.

Initial results from the post-mortem investigations were expected by Tuesday morning, police said.

According to the German Shooting Sport and Archery Federation, there are no restrictions on anyone over the age of 18 acquiring a crossbow in Germany.
