Apple Releases New TV App

Apple Releases New TV App

Apple has released its redesigned TV app in more than 100 countries, in a prelude to the launch of its subscription offering Apple TV+ this fall. Customers with 2019 Samsung smart TVs and select 2018 models can download the new TV app.

Owners of the updated Samsung smart TVs can subscribe to Apple TV channels within the Apple TV app, paying for only the ones they want, and watch on-demand content directly in the app.

Subscribers to these services can watch and download shows and movies both online and offline plus up to six family members can share these subscriptions to Apple TV channels using just their Apple ID and password.

Apple today officially launched its Amazon Channels competitor that offers a single platform for subscription services from HBO, Showtime and more. Apple said more channels would be added over time around the world. If these integrations truly are missing from the TV app on third-party devices, that's a key difference worth considering.

The update will also feature personalized recommendations for users and an Up Next section where users can find and watch content with activity synced across devices.

Hot on the heels of Apple's own release of updates to iOS and tvOS that include the company's new TV app, Samsung has announced that it too is launching the TV app today. Parents, desperate for family friendly content, will be elated to see a Kids section that serves up editorially selected titles, a practice that continues Apple's push of being the content curators which we first saw in Apple Music. And also starting today, customers with AirPlay 2-enabled Samsung smart TVs can stream videos and other content from their iPhone, iPad or Mac directly to their smart TVs; this requires customers to update to iOS 12.3 or macOS 10.14.5.

Furthermore, customers with eligible VIZIO, LG, and Sony smart TVs will also be able to enjoy AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support later this year.
