Dog disease that can be passed to humans confirmed in US

The disease originated at a small dog commercial breeding facility in Marion County, the Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship said in a statement.

Still, multiple cases of a zoonotic bacterial disease known as Canine Brucellosis was discovered at a dog breeding facility in Marion County, Iowa.

While the risk of pet owners becoming infected with the disease is low, the health agency says those who work closely with dogs - like breeders and veterinary staff - "face an increased risk since they may be exposed to blood, tissues and fluids associated with the birthing process".

The animals and the facility are quarantined as dogs undergo testing, the department said.

The statement also encouraged people to thoroughly wash their hands "after handling animals - even household pets".

Owners in possession of dogs who were potentially exposed to the infected canines have been notified.

Symptoms of the disease in dogs include infertility, spontaneous abortions and stillbirths, while signs of the disease in humans include fever, sweats, joint pain and headaches.

Human infection from the disease is rare, the university said. "Rarely, cases of brucellosis can involve the nervous system, eyes, or heart", reports the Center for Food Security and Public Health.

In the right conditions, canine brucellosis can survive for months.

AHeinz57 Pet Rescue bought 32 of the more than 200 dogs sold at the auction with $10,000 from an anonymous donor.

"We have not received any results yet", the organization posted on Facebook.

Heinz said they had to quarantine their adoption building for an additional 30 days.

"This is just one more reason to ADOPT and not SHOP!"

"They spent their lives in these little tiny boxes breeding over and over and over, and to finally get out and get some freedom and have to die would be so tragic and very bad", Heinz said.

The disease, which can be spread through reproductive fluids, is believed to only infect dogs and humans. But the good news is, most people are not at high risk for infection.
