Elton John and Taron Egerton perform a moving 'Rocketman' duet

John, an executive producer of the film, hadn't spoken much about the movie before it made its premiere at Cannes.

Rocketman shoots into theaters May 31.

Fans at the film's premiere party during the 2019 Cannes Film Festival were given a special treat when the two stars joined forces for a performance on Thursday night (May 16) on the beach in Cannes, France. He stood out too at the film's photo call, where he sported a powder blue suit and matching glasses. In so doing, Rocketman effectively portrays John as "that rarest of movie archetypes: a gay sex symbol", according to Variety.

The film will focus on Elton John's beginnings, starting when he was a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music and carrying over to when he reached global stardom through his influential and enduring musical partnership with his songwriting collaborator Bernie Taupin.

The movie, starring Taron Egerton, tracks the singer's first steps in the music business, from his tentative tryouts on the piano as a child to his explosion onto the USA scene and its drug and alcohol-fueled party world. Not only did he have to perform my life, he had to sing my life. "It's not [Queen biopic] Bohemian Rhapsody where the brilliant Rami Malek, who played Freddie [Mercury], lip synched".

Rumours that John might himself perform on the red carpet ahead of the premiere proved to be wide of the mark, despite a mischievous hint from Thierry Frémaux that a piano would be "hidden behind the curtain,".

Rocketman, which is directed by British actor turned filmmaker Dexter Fletcher, is released in cinemas next Wednesday.
