Fans lose their calm after knowing Robert Pattinson could be next Batman

"While sources say it's not yet a done deal, Pattinson is the top choice and it's expected to close shortly", Variety reports, noting that he has been chosen "even as Reeves continues to polish a final version of the script".

Both stars have experience working with blockbuster franchises, with Hoult having starred as Hank McCoy (better known by his mutant moniker, Beast) in multiple X-Men films.

Actor Robert Pattinson is a frontrunner for the role of Batman in DC's next movie which is being helmed by Matt Reeves.

Variety first reported that Pattinson was under negotiations to be cast in the role. The actor isn't without a Batman connection, of sorts, as he is also set to star in Christopher Nolan's next untitled movie that is due out next year; Nolan directed Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Trilogy.

Matt Reeves' production will be The Batman, which was initially an animated series in 2004 based on the comic books.

And Robert Pattinson is already a superhero to several fans. At 32, Pattinson will be the youngest actor to ever play Batman on the big screen.

Warner Bros. have made no comment on the report, though Pattinson is now preparing to shoot another film for them under director Christopher Nolan. It's also not going to be an origin story like many reboots and won't tie into the existing DC films.

The last actor to be given the title was Ben Affleck, with Kit Harington recently rumoured to be down for the part. Affleck portrayed an older Bruce Wayne who had spent two decades as the Dark Knight.

The Batman will hit theatres on June 25, 2021.

"It's fun to watch the Pattinson backlash and think back to the 90s when us cinema fanboys talked the same shit about those two up and coming pretty boys, DiCaprio and Pitt", Cargill wrote on Twitter.

It's not clear whether or not Pattinson will join the current makeup of superheros with Jason Momoa, Gal Gadot, and Ezra Miller who play Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and The Flash respectively.

Of course, we'll let you know more as we figure it all out.
