Malaysian teen kills herself after Instagram poll

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian teenager who posted an Instagram poll asking if she should live or die took her own life after a majority of respondents voted for the latter, sparking calls for an investigation.

"We are conducting a post-mortem to determine whether there were other factors in her death", Bolhassan said, adding that the girl had a history of depression.

Ramkarpal Singh, a Malaysian member of the parliament and a lawyer, suggested that her followers who voted for her death should be held responsible. She should have asked professional help before seeking help from the people.

Davia Emilia (16) from Sarawak in Malaysia committed suicide on Monday 13 May after asking her Instagram followers a disturbing question, Reuters reports. Malaysian youth and sports minister, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, said, "It is very unfortunate a young life was lost in this manner".

In citing the case of one Michelle Carter in the US in 2017, Ramkarpal said the girlfriend of a man who committed suicide was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for encouraging him to commit the said act and was sentenced to two and a half year's imprisonment as a result.

Police officers are reportedly not treating her death as suspicious, but her body has still been taken for an autopsy.

No news yet if any of those who voted "D" will be charged, but as always with such things, we heartily recommend to take these cries for help seriously.

It came after her heartbroken dad Ian Russell blamed the social media platform in part for her death.

He said: "I am genuinely anxious about the state of our youth's mental health".

"Our thoughts and prayers are with this young woman's family", read Wong's statement.

It remained unclear if any of the teen's followers reported Emilia to authorities or reached out to her family or whether it was simply an instance of a vast collective unknown shielded from being directly responsible simply made a decision to send the girl to her death - an instance of the platform amplifying the very worse of its self.

Wong Ching Yee, Instagram's head of communications in the Asia-Pacific expressed the company's sorrow at the death and said they have a responsibility for the safer of its users.
