May told to ditch Brexit talks with Labour

The European elections are set to take place on May 23 and a poll has already predicted Mr Farage's new party could push the Conservatives into fifth place among the electorate.

All of this will be warmly received by the Greens, who are going into the European elections hoping to ride their wave of momentum and deliver their best ever results.

"The problem we've got is for many people, they are so disgusted that their votes have been ignored, that promises have been broken, that there's a danger from our side of the argument that many like us who want this to be a free, independent country are so hacked off that they may stay at home".

"That means people who voted Leave and people who voted for Remain".

Almost three years since the United Kingdom voted 52 per cent to 48 per cent to leave the European Union, there is still no agreement among British politicians about when, how or even if the divorce should take place.

Despite the warning, Farage has an impressive track record of motivating non-voters.

"The first and most obvious takeaway is that the Brexit Party will do pretty well in terms of seats but the "Remain" parties may do well in terms of vote share", says Anand Menon, Director of UK in a Changing Europe, who argues that the splintered nature of the "Remain" parties - Change UK, the Liberal Democrats, the Greens and the Scottish National Party - could enhance their ability to reach a diverse range of supporters of remaining in the EU.

Offering an answer to this, Mr Farage called upon the gathered Brexiteers to engage with the grassroots, joking that individuals could "get out there" in their local town, village, or even pub. However, such a percentage would still fail to secure the 326 seats needed to win an outright majority.

"I can only plead with Labour supporters- don't stay at home, don't put that cross elsewhere, don't let them win". We have got to get a sense of optimism, a sense of opportunity.

At a stormy meeting on Monday of the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP), Wes Streeting, a critic of Mr Corbyn, warned that he would lead them to electoral defeat and was "a bigger issue for us than Brexit". "Speaking in West Yorkshire, he said: "...it's a duty.

Conversely, Change UK - the party formed by nine former Labour and three ex-Tory MPs - is languishing on just seven per cent support in the capital, according to the survey carried out on behalf of Queen Mary University of London.

"If we were able to make progress with Labour then we would look to bring the bill before the House of Commons before the European elections", he said. "We are aware that there is a de-alignment in politics".

Fresh from receiving cheers at a working men's club in Pontefract, Widdecombe was also well received at the evening event in Huddersfield, in a long-time Labour voting area but which, despite voting overwhelmingly for Brexit, is still represented in Parliament by strongly pro-Remain MPs.

The Brexit Party's candidate in the Peterborough by-election could only say that he hadn't "gone into the detail" when he was asked to back up claims that the European Union gives us less control in addressing education and child poverty.
